“Champions,
again”, a book on Pakistan's triumphant
World Twenty20 2009 campaign, was launched in Karachi
in the presence of former cricketers, renowned cricket
writers and fans of the game.
The book, authored by Faras Ghani, a journalist and
photographer, takes the readers through the rollercoaster
ride that was provided by the Pakistan cricket team,
from the depths of despair against India to the reaching
heights against Sri Lanka.
In presence were former Test fast-bowler Jalal-ud-Din,
former chairman of selectors Salahuddin Ahmed, experienced
writers and broadcasters including Qamar Ahmed, Mirza
Iqbal Baig, Shahid Hashmi, Osman Samiuddin as well as
Rishad Mehmood, Dawn newspaper's sports editor, who
hosted the event. Covered by various print publications
and television channels, the event was termed a major
success despite the absence of Younis Khan.
Salahuddin described the book as an outstanding effort,
one that others should follow up, while Qamar reckoned
that such books go a long way in encouraging youngsters
to take to cricket. Osman, Cricinfo's Pakistan editor
and who worked with Faras for almost a year, described
Pakistan win as a 'rebirth of many kinds' while appreciating
the effort in coming up with the book which now stands
as part of Pakistan cricket's history.
Younis, Pakistan's World Twenty20 winning captain, opted
to skip the event due to personal reasons despite assuring
the organisers of his presence earlier. It should be
mentioned that Younis has a guest contribution in “Champions,
again.” where he shares his thoughts, comments
and planning that underwent through the 21-day sojourn
in England.
The book is a compilation of Faras' articles done for
Dawn newspaper, added comments inside stories and opinions
as well as exclusive photographs he took during the
team's training sessions and matches. According to him,
the book became somewhat of a necessity as Pakistan
won a world cup after a gap of 17 years.
