Tell us about your education?
I studied in Lahore Grammar School and also Sacred Heart Convent in Pakistan. I went to the College of Home Economics and graduated with a concentration in arts and textiles.

How did you get involved in fashion design? Was it something that you always wanted to do?

I knew that my expertise was in art mediums and knowledge on textile, so I thought it would be best to put that to use by opening up my on fashion house.

Tell us about your label, what type of clothes do you design?

Our forte has always been couture, i.e., bridals and formal wear. Since May 2006, we have launched our prêt line, which is successfully selling in all stores.

You have had the chance to participate in international shows; tell us about them and where has your label been showcased thus far?

We have been very fortunate to be so well recognized since the time we started. We have participated in Bridal Asia twice, and also have had the opportunity to do fashion shows in New York and Washington D.C. At these shows, we showcase our latest designs of skirts, tops and heavy bridal ensembles.

The fashion industry has grown tremendously in the last few years; what changes have you seen and what future do you foresee for this industry?

The industry has seen its best boom in the last 6-7 years, especially with the advent of fashion schools which encourage the youth to take this as a serious profession. This is just the beginning, we are a fashion savvy nation and have a lot of creative potential; so the sooner the government starts supporting fashion weeks, the sooner the world will get to see the trendier side of Pakistan.

Would you say the designers of Pakistan are up to the international standards?

There is no doubt that we are up to international standards; however, much resource development and industrial support is needed to take this fashion business to next level.

What is the budget one should keep when ordering a designer bridal wear? What is the price range for an outfit by your label?

When we design our bridal wear, we keep in mind our customs and traditions, and then create a piece that’s an amalgamation of our latest color blends. We are guilty of catering to a high-end client, because we are all about quality and excellence.

Who is your target market and what type of image does your company portray?

We at Hajra Hayat take pride in providing our client quality work and services, and hence we are fortunate to have a fan following of people that have consistently come back to us even after 11 years.

What are the latest bridal wear trends? What are the hot colors for the upcoming summer wedding season?

The summer bride is all about gold hues and it’s always better to play with shades of bronze and gold hues of copper. This year, the bling is in so you will see a lot of gold and traditional red as always. This summer, we are bringing out muted contrast tones on red and using semi-precious stones as well.

With so much competition in the market, how does one manage to keep their label above the rest?

We have managed to compete in the market by always making sure that our collections have something new to offer each time and we deliver what we promise.

Where do you get your design inspirations from? What sets your label apart from other designers in the market?

When I’m working on a collection, my inspiration comes from three fundamentals: class, elegance and femininity. The most recent 2008 collection has seen a very floral blend, from the colors to motives.

What would you say about the fashion schools churning out new designers every year? Are the levels of standards improving by providing such education to inspiring designers?

I think education is the most important thing in any profession, it gives you an edge.

Lastly, what is your message to the readers of The Saturday Post?

You get one life, so give it your best and you will see great things come your way. Always keep smiling!
